2025 Lord Mayor's Small Business of the Year

Seesaw has been recognised as the winner of the 2025 Lord Mayor’s Small Business of the Year award.

An incredible honour, one that reflects not only our work as a studio but also the strength of Melbourne’s creative community and the vital role small businesses play in shaping the city’s culture and economy.

Whatever the industry, our approach is always strategic and focused on elevating business, people and the communities in which we work.

— Anita McArthur, Co-founder and Director

When Matt and I founded Seesaw in 2005, we wanted to build a studio that combined creativity with purpose, where design could balance commercial outcomes with genuine impact. Almost twenty years later, we are proud to be a team of ten, working across architecture, corporate, culture, infrastructure, education, property and retail. That original vision continues to guide us and has shaped the way we collaborate with clients and partners.

Seesaw has grown into a values-led practice. In 2023, we became a Certified B Corporation, meeting the highest verified standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability. Since 2020 we have also been carbon neutral. Our commitment to Design for Good means that each year we dedicate a percentage of our income to pro-bono branding projects and donations aligned with issues close to our hearts such as gender equality, mental health, sustainability, equitable education and affordable housing. This focus has led to partnerships with organisations including Smiling Mind, the Victorian Pride Centre, the Australian Gender Equality Council, CERES Environmental Park and Joy FM.

To be recognised, not only for our longevity but also for the contribution we have made, is wonderful. This city has shaped us, and in return, we are grateful to have contributed culturally and economically.

Over the years, we have had the privilege of working with many of Melbourne’s defining organisations and institutions. A recent highlight was being awarded the Melbourne Airport account — a complex and fascinating client that represents a rare opportunity to help shape the gateway to our city. Every project, large or small, reflects our belief that design has the power to create clarity, engagement and measurable impact.

Looking ahead, we are focused on expanding our strategic and digital offerings while continuing to craft brands that create meaningful change. After 18 years in the City of Melbourne, we are preparing for our move to Carlton and are excited for what this next chapter will bring.

This award honours the journey Matt and I began twenty years ago and shines a light on the creativity, resilience and dedication of our whole team. Most of all, it recognises the positive impact a small yet passionate business can create in the city we love.
